ACADEMY OF HANDMADE ANIMATION (AHA)
I have started an animation school:
The first session was summer 2025
the 2nd is SPRING 2026, To enroll send me an email at [email protected].
I have 20+ years of experience making animation on paper … as well as stop motion, environmental animation, pixilation and rotoscope, cut out and direct animation on film , which can all be explored, or you can simply work with very simple materials, pencil, pens, paper.
Anyone can learn to animate. it’s 50$ a week and pay as you go. I will meet once a week for at least one hour with each student to help you create a finished animated film; there will be one other group session/ talk optional to attend, recorded and accessible at any time.
Please email me if you are interested, this period will run until May 31
The goal of this "school" is also to open a discussion about what animation is or could be, particularly in a post-AI, (which is post-tweening, post-CGI) world, to do things the hard way, or to make things that are rough or expose the limitations, or the liminalities of animation, and reinforce the essentially INDEXICAL (as they say) nature of animation....staking out a kind of territory, hugely nostalgic for 20th century animation but also trying to use apps that work better than anything ever has, and to see some aspects of technology as truly freeing for the creator who wants to make movies frame by frame.
I define this philosophy (or set of approaches) as ANIME POVERA, which is also the title of a book I am trying to write about animation.
